Q. How did Big R Originate?

A. When the Farm & Home retail industry began, the stores in the East and the Midwest referred to themselves as Farm & Home Stores. The stores in the West referred to themselves as Ranch & Home Stores. Many of us in the industry decided we needed a common name for identification and signage. The western group took the initiative by adopting the Big R name. They selected Big R because it was neutral and they could develop it into the image they desired. The letter R simply came from the word Ranch of Ranch & Home Supply.

We in the Midwest liked the image and signage; therefore, we adopted the Big R name from our co-op members in the West.
